The Alabama Department of Education each year publishes "Report Card" on the various schools and school systems around the State, including a summary "Report Card" for the entire state. While the individual school and school districts information is beyond the scope of this site, detailed information can be found on the Alabama Department of Education's website.
For information on Alabama schools as a whole, the links below can be used to access the full Report Cards for the past eight years.

The charts below compares school funding and performance over the previous years since at least the 1999-2000 school year. The data in the charts below was gathered entirely from the Alabama Department of Education's yearly Report Cards (the sole exception being the calculated per-pupil spending figure in the second table) and is presented for comparison purposes only. The links above are provided for easy verification of the data presented below.
Note: Beginning with the 2003-2004 school year, information on remedial rates in college were not supplied on the Report Card as they had been in previous years. ACT scores were dropped beginning with the 2004-2005 school year, and SAT scored were dropped beginning with the 2006-2007 school year.
Enrollment & Financing: This chart shows how many students attended school during each year, the projected 4-year dropout rate, the total state funding for the school system, and the total state spending for the school system.

Per-Pupil Spending: The ALDOE supplies a per-pupil figure in each report card, but in calculating it they use "allowable expenditures" instead of total expenditures, which means they exclude "capital outlay and interest on the school debt." The "Calculated" figure in this table was arrived at by using total expenditures divided by enrollment, both figures supplied in the previous chart. The inflation adjusted figures are given in 2007 dollars, and were calculated using a GDP deflator. You can perform these calculations yourself here.

Writing Assessment: Each year, 5th and 7th graders are given tests to measure their writing ability. However, beginning in the 2001-2002 school year the reporting format changed dramatically. The columns marked N/A indicate the columns not applicable for each year. The first two columns use the old system, merely a numerical score with a letter grade. The last three columns use the new system, evaluating what percentage of test takers met or exceeded grade-level standards. For example, in the 2002-2003 school year, 39.9% of 5th graders met or exceeded standards, and the remaining 60.1% of 5th graders either partially met or did not meet grade-level standards.
